The Longleaf Pine is a handsome American native tree, and the state tree of Alabama. It is hardy through zones 7 to 9, and occurs naturally all through the south-eastern states. This unique pine has extremely long needles, reaching 18 inches in length. This give the crown of the tree a special, soft character, as the needles weep slightly, and flutter in even the lightest breeze. The tree has handsome, rugged brown bark, and attractive winter buds covered in silver hairs. Mature trees will produce cylindrical cones that can be 10 inches long. Once established this is a fast-growing tree, that can add 2 feet to its height every year. In a few years you will have a maturing tree that will add rugged beauty to your yard. Expect your tree to reach between 20 and 50 feet in height in time, and be 10 – 20 feet tall. Eventually it may exceed these sizes, and mature forest trees can be almost 100 feet tall.

  • Handsome native pine tree
  • Very long, slightly weeping needles
  • Attractive deeply-textured bark
  • Drought and salt resistant
  • Help restore the natural ecology

Plant your Longleaf Pine in almost any kind of well-drained soil. It will grow in sand, loam or clay, and is unaffected by either acidic or slightly alkaline soil conditions. Water it regularly for the first few years, but after that this is a drought-resistant tree that needs no attention. It is also resistant to air-borne salt, so it can be planted on the coast, or near highways that may be salted in the winter time. It has no significant pests or diseases
