The Little Gem Magnolia is a beautiful small version of the familiar southern magnolia, with the same beautiful pure-white perfumed flowers throughout the summer. It makes the perfect evergreen tree across all the milder parts of the country, with its beautiful glossy leaves looking perfect all year round. Underneath the leaves are covered with a handsome dense brown ‘fur’, which gives the tree lots of character. The flowers grow throughout the summer, filling the air with a rich perfume that will delight you. Unlike the ordinary southern magnolia, you will not be waiting years to see blooms, as this tree begins to bloom when only 3 or 4 feet tall. In fall the fascinating cone-like seed pods open to reveal bright red seeds, adding color and interest to another season. Its compact size is ideal for smaller gardens, and even for growing in large planters and containers.

  • Unique evergreen magnolia that blooms even when young
  • Compact large shrub or small tree
  • Spectacular large, pure white scented blooms
  • Attractive cones in fall with colorful red seeds
  • Lovely evergreen tree for specimens, screening and planters

Plant the Little Gem Southern Magnolia in any soil, preferably with plenty of organic material added. It thrives in damp or normal gardens, and once it is established it is moderately drought resistant too. It will grow from zone 7 through the south, so this beautiful tree can be grown easily across a large part of the country. In borderline areas it can also be grown against a sunny wall, where it will thrive. In drier regions it should be planted in a partially-shaded area. No pests or diseases will bother this tree, which is long-lived and requires no special care to produce its marvelous blossoms year after year.
